Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church was organized in 1960. It was the first church constructed near the west boundary of Tempe, Arizona. Pastor Ken Fuerbringer, missionary at large, helped to begin the congregation and also established a ministry on the ASU campus. This ministry included a Gamma Delta chapter with Beautiful Savior as the host congregation. Because this was the only Missouri Synod congregation east of Phoenix, an increasing membership prompted an addition to the church. This addition included ten new Sunday School rooms, an expanded kitchen, and a new fellowship area. Larger office areas for the pastor and church secretary were also added. Various organizations were also active in the church, including LLL, LWML, Couples Club, and Boy Scouts.
Following an addition to the worship area, the members decided that the most God-pleasing way to expand was by the establishment of mission congregations in the area. The congregation thus became a major support in the founding of Peace Lutheran Church of South Phoenix, St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Mesa, and the Gethsemane Lutheran Church of South Tempe, along with continued development of the campus ministry at ASU. With the assistance of vicars and a DCE, Beautiful Savior congregation provided services and parish support to these missions under the leadership of Pastor Martin Lundi. Under the District Mission Board, the campus ministry was organized as Alleluia Lutheran Student Ministry, and separated from the congregation.
Rev. John F. Pope served the congregation from 1993 to 1998, retiring as Pastor Emeritus. Today the congregation has a membership of approximately 200. Rev. Earl Bielefeld has served as pastor from 1999 until Ausugut 2002, when he retired. The congregation is currently being served by Rev. Gary Boye, whose ministry at Beautiful Savior began February, 2005.
