Help Line Volunteers AzTeC Computing offers a Help Line service to provide support for AzTeC users that have questions, problems, and frustrations. The Help Line is a voice mailbox that has recorded announcements explaining how to connect to AzTeC for initial registration, the current operational status, meeting information, and any current unusual problems. The first option on the AzTeC Help Line recording requests that you leave information and an AzTeC volunteer will call you back and try to help. This support effort is provided by volunteers from their homes. They call into the AzTeC voicemail box and listen to messages and then call people and try to help them. The volunteers receive initial training and a worksheet of common problems with potential solutions. They receive additional support from their fellow Help Line volunteers and many attend a monthly meeting (not required) where they share experiences and learn from each other. If you would be interested in becoming an AzTeC Help Line volunteer, please send an email indicating your interest. Send your email to ricklew@aztecfreenet.org or while in AzTec just use ricklew Help Line Number: (602)468-9765 |

Public
Meeting Volunteers AzTeC Computing has conducted public meetings in the past. With interest from our users, it may be possible in the near future. These meetings were primarily to assist new AzTeC users with problems they might be having and to provide insights, some advanced tips, and on-line training. An exciting part of the meetings is that experienced AzTeC users also attend and share with others their special WEB sights, email tips, and file upload/download advice. AzTeC Computing provides refreshments and AzTeC User Guides for sale at these meetings through the efforts of volunteers. AzTeC purchases the refreshments and the volunteers provide the setup, serving, and cleanup. If you would be interested in becoming an AzTeC public meeting volunteer, please send an email indicating your interest. Send your email to rwertz if you are interested in public meetings or wish to volunteer. |

Special Interest Groups Moderator Volunteer All the Moderator has to do is to check daily the messages sent in by SIG users for posting. The Moderator approves those which meet the standards below and disapproves those which do not meet the standards. Those messages which are approved can be read in the SIG area. If there are any questions or problems the Moderator can ask for help from the SIG review committee. If the Moderator can't check messages on a particular day or is planning to be away for a few days he or she can arrange with one of the backup Moderators to take over for a while. |

Software Development Support Volunteers AzTeC Computing is investigating software upgrades to improve the AzTeC service; in features, responsiveness, and stability. Volunteers need experience in LINUX and online service systems. Volunteers would work remotely and be provided access to a system level capable of allowing them to participate in new system implementation, new feature checkout, and debug investigation. If you are interested in helping AzTeC in this volunteer effort please send an email indicating your interest and providing a phone number where you can be contacted to discuss this special volunteer effort in more detail. Send your email to: rwertz@aztecfreenet.org or while in AzTeC just use : rwertz |

System Volunteers Here is what we have, what we want to do, and what it takes to get it. Currently AzTeC runs on two Sun Sparc20 boxes/SunOS 4.1.4/FreePort 23 BBS software (which is really simple, rather bloated and obsolete too) AzteC currently has about 7000 users and provides Email Usenet WWW access as well as local content and web hosting to 501c3 non-profits. A lot of work was done to upgrade what could be upgraded... we now run latest versions of sendmail, wuftpd, apache, cnews, and almost all upgradeable utilities have been updated (openssh, perl, bash, tar, gzip etc.) So, the environment is as good as it can be on this operating system... We want to migrate this setup to curr. Solaris OS, port the BBS software, and implement some extra features like: IRC (local chat, moderated at first), POP3 and Webmail, SPAM mgmt of some sort, enhanced web hosting features and a lot more. Then (or rather, along with this) we have a Linux box ready where we want to run Chebucto (Csuite) BBS software (designed around Lynx, Pine, Tin and IRC vs. the script-based Freeport). I will be happy to talk to any volunteer who feels they can help along the way -- please do call our help line and leave a contact phone number! :) This is a fun project, much appreciated by AzTeC users, and you can conveniently work from anywhere you like: home, Tucson, or London alike :) I will supply all needed remote access info and you will be able to work whenever you like, from wherever you like, on an interesting and challenging project which would look great on your resume too! :) So, please step up - your local FreeNet needs you! Cheers, Ivan |
