The June 2003 AzTeC Freenet Newsletter
Greetings AzTeC Users:

This is the first of a monthly newsletter to keep you informed of changes
to the AzTeC server. On our web page at http://www.aztecfreenet.org/ you
can read the blow by blow account of how we got from ASU to EMR and that was
just the first hurdle! We now have updated just about everything possible
and are considering adding new features and services soon. Secure Pop 3
email may be in our future if there is enough interest. Local chat or IRC
is also a possibility now that we are not under state restrictions. Pine
mail or something like it is also in our future as Linux people start
building the new server. We hope you experienced techs out there will
drop me a note at goss@aztecfreenet.org along with a resume or specific
mention of your previous projects and join this fun project that will
benefit the entire community.

Here are ways you can help to keep us going: volunteer to help with
fund raising, grant writing, publicity, public meetings, help line,
business plans etc. Some of you just use AzTeC for mail forwarding
and we would invite you to get further involved with hosting a special
interest group or just contributing your thoughts on various issues.
It takes only a few minutes to moderate a SIG group and it will
introduce you to a lot of the hidden people who help make AzTeC a
community. If there are some people out there willing to join the AzTeC
Board which involves meeting every other month and helping to frame the
future of AzTeC, please look under Administration on the main menu for
information. It is involved, enthusiastic people who can make a difference!

Also, here is a challenge: if each AzTeC user would bring in just one new
member we can increase membership and open the door for more improvements.
AzTeC is one the few Free-Nets still in existence. There are wonderful
possibilities for us in the future. We can't afford to get complacent and
need some enthusiastic people willing to help in various capacities. AzTeC
has always prided itself on being a family of community volunteers and it
is time to step up to the plate in order to improve ! For those who are
negative about a text based server in this day and age, consider the fact
you do not have to contend with pop up ads or be assaulted with tons of ads
when you log in. Also note, that even during the move we managed to make
the transition and save mail. Some did not even know we had moved! Then
there is the issue of security. AzTeC now has better security than some
commercial groups. We are planning to do as much as possible on the Spam
issue as well.

We have had an influx of new residents in the state and we need to let them
know we are here. Tell your co-workers and help them get online. We still have
a good base of users, but for grants etc. it is important that we build up
our membership. In this economic downturn I would guess there are many who
would take advantage of our free services. Not much is free these days!

Keep in touch,
Nathalie
