(M,1,5) AZTEC FAQ The following are commonly asked questions about the AzTeC Freenet. Q. What is AzTeC Computing? A. An online community information service called a "Freenet" that is operated completely by volunteers Q. Is AzTeC Free? A. AzTeC is offered at no charge to the community through the efforts of volunteers and the generous donations of individuals, schools and companies in Arizona. Q. Can I write out the registration form and send it in, if we don't have a printer? A. Yes, but be sure to register online first, and don't forget to sign the form. Q. How do I print out the information I find on AzTeC? A. Check your software manual. It may suggest that you "cut and paste" or use the "Print Capture" feature. Q. When will my login and password be usable? A. It only takes a few days after you have registered online and sent in your signed disclaimer. Mail in your disclaimer to: AzTeC P.O. Box 15844 Phoenix, AZ 85060-5844 You will receive a confirmation notice in the mail or you will be contacted by phone. Q. What is my email address? A. For the Internet it is your AzTeC "ID" plus @aztecfreenet.org Note: Your old asu.edu address on in coming mail will be forwarded until Feb. 2004. We encourage you though, to change to the new address above @aztecfreenet.org as soon as possible. Within AzTeC you will use your "ID" as your email address. Q. How do I send email? A. Choose either the Post Office from the "Main Menu" or type s at any Your Choice==> prompt, then follow the instructions. Q. How do I correct my typing errors? A. New members start with the default "no editor". You can type out email messages, but it is difficult to correct mistakes. Choose a different editor by typing go edit at the main prompt, then choose Chet's Editor. Press h for help. Remember to "save" at the end of selecting Chet's editor so it will be there every time you log in. Q. How do I use Chet's Editor? A. Move around the page using the arrows on your keyboard. Before typing your message you must bring the cursor down below the header using the *down* arrow. You must press the key at the end of each line. Or use the -X W command (word wrap - see next question) each time you enter CE. Exit Chet's Editor by typing the key, then the letter z Or by pressing Ctrl-X Ctrl-C Q. How do I use word wrap in Chet's Editor? A. 1st, the word wrap won't work *unless* you've first set the line length (or if you prefer, the right margin), by first pressing CTRL-X and then F. At the tiny prompt at lower left, you enter the desired line length (a good length would be 65). Then press enter. This sets the line length. Now you can set the word wrap function by typing ESC, X, W and then Enter. Q. Do I have Internet access through AzTeC? A. You will have access to Internet email, some Usenet news and discussion groups, and limited access to the Internet through the World Wide Web. Q. How do I use the World Wide Web? A. Choose "Access to the WWW" on the Main Menu. Use your up and down arrow to move from subject to subject, and your right arrow key to connect to a link. The Left arrow takes you back to the previous page. To enter an Internet URL address press: g (go) and type the address in the Enter URL line. Press k for other key commands. Q. Can I download information from the WWW? A. Yes. You can download any web page's source document by highlighting the link you want and pressing 'd' for download. Press enter. It asks you to - 'Enter filename'. Change the file name to: ~/work/ Press Enter. The document will be transferred to your AzTeC work directory. From there you can download the file to your PC. Or press p to email the web page to yourself. Q. How do I find out how to transfer files from my home computer to AzTeC and vise versa? A. Review your communication software's user manual, then read the instructions in the AzTeC Help Desk on the Main Menu. Remember you can always press h for onscreen help. Q. Sometimes I get a connect message, but the system does not respond. What is wrong? A. The system may be down, overloaded, or the modems may not be working properly. Please just try again later. If it continues, check with the help line at 480-391-6565 for updates. Be sure and leave your name and phone number for a call back from one of our volunteers. If you have a blocked phone be sure and dial #87 before you dial the help line. If your phone is blocked we cannot call you back ! Q. What is the Telnet and URL address for AzTeC? A.
