(M,14,6,1) [vote.about.2-3 - Last updated 19-Mar-91 by mak] About the VOTE System The "VOTE" service is a general purpose system designed to provide network access to a set information describing voting issues. Access to the service is provided via a client program called "VOTE". Using VOTE, network users can read descriptions of vote issues, vote on currently active issues, look at the tally counts for vote issues, and add their own vote issues. VOTE provides a user interface which is very similar to MGNR (the Usenet news reader) and SGNR (the bulletin board reader). When VOTE is invoked without an explicit votegroup (from the "Polling Place") the user is provided with a hierarchical list of votegroups, just as MGNR provides a list of newsgroups. Votegroup names will in most cases be similar or identical to newsgroup names defined for the same area (such as "FreePort.sci.comp.ibmpc"). Initially there will be only a few votegroups defined, but this will hopefully grow over time. When VOTE is invoked with a specific votegroup, usually via a menu entry for that votegroup, it behaves in a fashion similar to the bulletin board reader. Once a votegroup is selected, header information for issues within that group is displayed. The user can then perform various operations on any issue in the group, or add a new issue (if the group allows it). Note that there are several levels of commands within VOTE. The user can get help at any level by typing "h", and can get a list of available commands at any level by typing "?". Copyright 1991 Case Western Reserve University. All Rights Reserved.
