(M,5,1) Special Interest Groups ( SIG's ) on AzTeC 1. What is a SIG ? AzTeC has been established to promote communications within the community through the use of personal computers. One service provided is allowing groups of people with a common interest a means to share information and opinions. This service is referred to as a Special Interest Group or SIG. 2. How do SIGS work ? Each SIG has a Discussion Group which is an area of AzTeC where users can read messages from others with the same interests and send replies to these messages, or submit messages on new subjects which are available for users of the SIG to read and reply. This is similar to the familiar computer bulletin boards. All AzTeC SIG's are moderated. That means that all messages are reviewed by a moderator before they are made available to be read by the SIG users. This is necessary to make sure only suitable information is posted on the SIG. 3. Where do SIG's come from ? Clubs or organizations can propose and operate a SIG for their members. Members of the club can post meeting schedules and discuss items of interest to them. Other possibilities include posting minutes of meetings and reports of club activities. Individuals can also request that a SIG be started on a topic in which they are interested. Suppose you are interested in sailing. If you are willing to be a Moderator and know at least one other person who will agree to being backup Moderator when you are away, you can propose a sailing SIG. You could hold discussions with other members of AzTeC also interested in sailing on good places to go, sailboat regattas, and the pro's and con's of the newest equipment. All you have to do is follow the instructions as explained below in "How can I start a SIG ?". The application will be reviewed by the SIG review committee who will contact the proposed Moderator and backup Moderators to explain the duties of a Moderator and determine if the proposed Moderators are willing and able to perform them. When all is confirmed and the AzTeC Board of Directors approves the SIG, the AzTeC technical support staff will be asked to set up the SIG area. The SIG review committee will contact the Moderators and let them know when the SIG can begin operations. 4. What are the duties of the Moderator ? All the Moderator has to do is to check daily the messages sent in by SIG users for posting. The Moderator approves those which meet the standards below and disapproves those which do not meet the standards. Those messages which are approved can be read in the SIG area. If there are any questions or problems the Moderator can ask for help from the SIG review committee. If the Moderator can't check messages on a particular day or is planning to be away for a few days he or she can arrange with one of the backup Moderators to take over for a while. 5. What are the standards for messages on a SIG ? A message may be posted on any SIG by any member of AzTeC. Moderators will not accept messages which include any of the following: A. Solicitations to commit illegal acts. B. Solicitations for commercial purposes. C. Copyrighted software or other information without the owner's permission. D. Proprietary information such as financial account numbers, access codes, passwords, etc. without the owner's permission. E. Threats or harassment of others. F. Offensive language. The AzTeC Board of Directors may revoke the privilege to maintain a SIG if these standards are violated. 6. Why would a SIG ever be automatically removed from AzTeC? All SIGs are automatically scanned for activity (postings by the moderator). After 45 days of no activity on a SIG, the SIG moderator will be notified by e-mail of impending termination of the SIG. After 60 days of no activity on a SIG, the SIG will be removed from AzTeC. 7. How can I start a SIG ? The AzTeC SIG application form is a menu item on the "Special Interest Groups" menu. Print it out on your computer, fill out the information, sign the form, and mail it to the following address. AzTeC Computing P.O.
